Progressive Era

Image
This image is from  americanyawp.com .                   Progress is the physical or mental act of moving forward. The progressive era, according to  gwu.edu , is the period of time between 1890 and 1920. " Progressivism is an umbrella label for a wide range of economic, political, social, and moral reforms"( digitalhistory.uh.edu ). This was basically a time where the middle class and working class sought to better there society through action. " Progressives enacted minimum wage laws for women workers, instituted industrial accident insurance, restricted child labor, and improved factory regulation" ( digitalhistory.uh.edu ). This movement was lead by people called the Progressives who were "... people who believed that the problems society faced (poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare) could best be addressed by providing good education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace" ( gwu.edu )....

Future

Image
This image came from  youtube.com .        In an article from 1952 found on  smithsonianmag.com  the author had quite a few predictions about how life would be like in the next 50 years. The author predicted that the average lifespan would be 100 years, there would be no more world wars, the threat of overpopulation would be no more, and there would be a cure for most diseases. The average life span idea isn't completely absurd but still far off from what we are at in 2018. The threat of overpopulation is still a fear that we are working against today. Sadly there was a world war during the 1900-1950 no war time span. We do have more cures for diseases than we did in 1900 but having a cure for the majority of diseases is a hopeful, far-fetched idea.         Another article from  bbc.com  talked about the prediction of a man 100 years ago named John Elfreth Wa...

Women's Suffrage

Image
This image is found on  wikipedia.org .           The fight for women's suffrage was a long and hard battle that lasted almost one hundred years ( history.com ). There were arguments for women's suffrage that played on the strength's of women and their ability to meaningfully contribute to society. And there were many arguments against women's suffrage that were rooted in stereotypes and people's desire for men to stay in power and control. But despite this on August 26, 1920 women were finally given the right to vote as the 19th amendment was ratified.       In the 1890s the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the organization for women's suffrage, created a new argument to fight for women's suffrage by stating that women should vote because they were different from men. Meaning that they would bring a new viewpoint to the table "They could make their domesticity into a p...

political cartoon

Image
This image was found on  politicalcartoons  and the author of this cartoon is addressing America's difficulties in managing all of its acquired territories. As the different territories such as Cuba, Hawaii, The Philippines, and Puerto Rico are all characterized as children who are all in need of adult supervision that the Uncle Sam in the cartoon is unable to provide to all of them simultaneously.         This political cartoon was found on  teachingsocials  and it shows Uncle Sam stepping on The Philippines and Cuba and moving toward Canada. The author of this cartoon is representing America's growing imperialism and thirst for new territories. This cartoon is also quite ironic since America just gained its independence from Britain and is now claiming new territories under colonial rule.        This political cartoon is from  weebly.com  and illustrates the careless manne...

Korean War

Image
This is an image of the Korean War Memorial found at  tripscout.co .              As found on  history.com , The Korean War began in the 1950's and was between North Korea and South Korea. North Korea attacked South Korea, crossing the border, and was backed by the communist Soviet Union who supported their governmental policies. Soon after North Korea's declaration of war, the American troops came into play on the side of South Korea. This war was seen as the "first military action of the cold war"( history.com ) and in the American's eyes a fight against communism. There was a stalemate between the two armies, as they were both fighting with only lives lost and no gain. In 1953 the war came to an end with 5 million soldiers dead and a divided peninsula between the North and the South.
