Progressive Era
Progress is the physical or mental act of moving forward. The progressive era, according to gwu.edu, is the period of time between 1890 and 1920. "Progressivism is an umbrella label for a wide range of economic, political, social, and moral reforms"(digitalhistory.uh.edu). This was basically a time where the middle class and working class sought to better there society through action. "Progressives enacted minimum wage laws for women workers, instituted industrial accident insurance, restricted child labor, and improved factory regulation"(digitalhistory.uh.edu).This movement was lead by people called the Progressives who were "...people who believed that the problems society faced (poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare) could best be addressed by providing good education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace" (gwu.edu). According to britannica.com Progressives had many different ideas about how their goals should be met. But all of the progressives, "...who formed new organizations and institutions with the common objective of strengthening the national government and making it more responsive to popular economic, social, and political demands(britannica.com). So though there approaches were different their end goal was the same.
Governmental goals:
-they wanted a new government system that's focus shifted from rights to and "...stressed collective responsibilities and duties"(britannica.com).-They wanted to redesign the government so that it was influenced more by public opinion.(britannica.com)
-They also wanted to change governing institutions so that the state legislature and Congress had less power than "independent executive power"(britannica.com) such as the president and governor.
-They wanted to use the opinion of the people to strengthen the government (britannica.com)
-They wanted the government to take a more hands-on approach and start solving societal problems (historama.org)
--to create political reform (historama.org)
-limiting the power of big business(historama.org)
-to get rid of corruption in the government (historama.org)
Quality of life Goals:
-to increase awareness of child labor (historama.org)
--create a Health and safety codes (historama.org)
-protect natural resources/ environmental (historama.org)
-to improve working conditions (historama.org)
